International Trans Prisoner Day of Action & Solidarity

January 22, 2019 marks the fourth annual international Trans Prisoner Day of Action and Solidarity. If you are on the front lines, doing this work every day, then January 22 is a day to celebrate and honor your actions. For everyone else, this is a day to collaborate, be an accomplice not an ally, to prioritize, act, protest, resist, raise awareness, and reach out to trans prisoners, forging new relationships and dismantling the isolation of prison.

Locally, the Gainesville Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee meets of the fourth Tuesday of every month to co-host a prisoner letter writing night with other local groups such as SWOP Behind Bars and the Campaign to Fight Toxic Prisons.

The fourth Tuesday of this month, January 22, 2019 is also the same day the Alachua County Commission has been asked to revisit the issue of the use of prison slavery for county projects as a courtesy to one commissioner who was not present for the vote, and is currently advocating to continue the practice. Last month, County Commissioners made a powerful decision to terminate their contracts with prison work camps, distancing themselves from the modern form of convict leasing that has occurred throughout the state since the formation of the FL Department of Corrections (FDOC) in 1868.

It is with all of this in mind, and in solidarity with trans inmates and all inmates in Alachua County, we will be meeting at the Civic Media Center at 4:30pm and marching to the County Commission meeting where we will be telling our Commissioners that we demand an end to prison slave labor, once and for all. Even if you do not plan to speak, please show up wearing red to display support.

Since the Commission meeting is during our scheduled letter writing night, we will be writing our letters during the Commission meeting instead of at our usual location in the Civic Media Center. This month, in addition to our regular guests, we will also be joined by the newly formed Gainesville chapter of Black and Pink!
