Gator Law ACLU Presents: Civil Rights March & Peace Rally

Published kenziecooke - Thu, 03/12/2015 - 3:59pm

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Selma, Gator Law ACLU along with the ACLU of Florida, the UF Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations, the Black Law Student’s Association and the American Constitution Society is organizing a civil rights march and peace rally to be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015.

The march will begin at 11:00 am at the Levin College of Law and finish at the Plaza of the Americas in front of Library West. Once all the marchers reach Plaza of the Americas, we will hold a peace rally where any organization that would like will have 3-5 minutes to speak about whatever civil rights issues are important to them. In addition, there will be opportunities for tabling along the sidewalks, so each organization may reach out to everyone in attendance. We hope to have as many organizations from the University as well as from the wider Gainesville community participate.

We are working on bringing prominent civil rights leaders who were present at Selma to speak at the rally. We will also have local, state and perhaps national media coverage. This is a great opportunity for your organization to have its voice heard!

Here is how you can help:
1. Sign your group up to participate in our Civil Rights March from the law school to Plaza of the Americas.
2. If interested, let us know if your group would like to speak at the Peace Rally promoting the civil liberty interest of your choice.
3. Sign up to co-sponsor the event either by promoting the Civil Rights March & Peace Rally or by financial support to bring prominent civil rights leaders like Congressman John Lewis or Amelia Boynton Robinson to speak.
4. Make signs, recruit participants, and get excited to join our civil rights march!

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Gator Law ACLU
