Sea Chantey Workshop

Published Robbie - Tue, 03/26/2013 - 5:55pm
Sea chanteys (or shanties) were an essential tool for the working sailor, and are an integral part of musical tradition. More importantly, they’re really fun to sing!

In this free sing-along workshop, we’ll talk a little bit about the history and use of these energetic songs of the oceans, inland waterways, and docks, but mostly we’ll sing them. There is no need to be a good singer—all the sailors sang, and they were definitely not all songbirds.

Chris Maden has been a welcome presence at chantey sings on both coasts of the US, and was a featured performer at the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in New Hampshire for the past several years. A few local musicians will be helping out as well, sharing their knowledge and voices.
