Through the Door of No Return” (1997) is by filmmaker Shirkiana Aina. She made this documentary to capture her efforts to learn more about her father, who died when she was a child. Her father was a Michigan man descended from slaves, who was labeled a radical by the FBI. He died while in Ghana from malaria while working to emigrate there.

Aina travels to Ghana, documenting the oral history of slavery in Elmina, a port where Africans were warehoused before shipping to the New World. She also films African-Americans who have established a colony in Ghana, choosing to raise their families there.

The filmmaker Shirkiana Aina is the wife of the filmmaker Haile Gerima. She was a co-producer for his film “Sankofa”. Her experience with “Sankofa” inspired her to make “Through the Door of No Return.”
