AdShades: MFA Art Installation

Published Jimmy - Fri, 04/08/2011 - 7:11pm

On Friday, April 15th beginning at 7pm the Civic Media Center will host an installation by University of Florida MFA student Greg Cole entitled "AdShades." AdShades is Mr. Cole's MFA thesis project. The basic premise of the project is to use digital technology to block, analyze, and understand advertising in our lives. The project includes software tools to process video and images and will hopefully be brought to the android marketplace early this summer.

The installation will consist primarily of large printed images of urban landscapes with the advertising blocked by different versions of the software, as well as inverse images in which the landscapes are erased and only blocks of advertising imagery and words are present. There will be video and slideshows of images and landscapes processed by the AdShades software, and the event will also include an interactive space in which participants can use a laptop and goggles outfitted with a live version of the software to view adertising-intensive landscapes.
