FAB International Education Presents: "2 Million Minutes"

Published Jimmy - Wed, 01/26/2011 - 10:25pm

This groundbreaking, controversial documentary film takes an in-depth look at how students in the United States allocate their high school years (approximately four years or two million minutes) compared with India and China. The film forms a picture of the various levels of global education and addresses the implications of these differences on the 21st century global economy. (from http://www.2mminutes.com/films/)

From the FAB International Education Group: Florida Alternative Breaks (FAB) is a student run service organization that is based in the Center for Leadership and Service at the University of Florida. FAB sends out week long community service trips during academic breaks addressing different social issues to areas within the United States and internationally. Our trip issue this year is international education, and we will be traveling to Guatemala in March to volunteer at the Miguel Angel Asturias Academy. As we become a more global society, education is becoming more critical for us to understand and appreciate our different value systems. However, education systems in developing countries are faced with challenges such as poverty, war, famine and the lack of resources. We will be exposed to a different educational system than the United States. Service will include finalizing the installation of a school library as well as helping Guatemalan students with book exploration and literacy. Our service will not stop once we come back to Gainesville. Upon our return, we plan to share our new found knowledge with our community to raise awareness of the educational injustices experienced both domestically and internationally.

FAB's Education International trip will be collecting school supplies at the
screening of "2 Million Minutes" on February 7th. We will be accepting
notebooks, pencils, pens, markers, crayons, etc. to take with us to the
Miguel Angel Austurias Academy this spring break. If you would like to learn
