ShandsVista Presents: "A Sh'mal World"

"A Sh’mal" World journeys through the life and heart of Sh’mal Ellenberg, a quirky social worker who, with a mixture of persistence, humor and compassion, offers stability and support to his mentally-ill, drug addicted clients. But his emotions waver when he faces a reunion with his son.

Sh'mal can relate to his clients and their life on the fringes of society—never losing his cool when they throw tantrums or get evicted from their apartments. Yet, when faced with the choice to reunite with his estranged, alcoholic, and sometimes homeless son after a ten year disconnect, Sh'mal must come to terms with his own conflicting emotions about family, addiction and the struggle to fit into mainstream society.

Produced by students at the University of Florida’s Documentary Institute, "A Sh’mal World" was a semi-finalist at the 2008 Angelus Student Film Festival and a merit award winner at the 2008 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

After the film, join co-director Laureen Ricks, UF psychiatry faculty, and ShandsVista/Florida Recovery Center medical staff for a roundtable discussion of community mental health and addiction treatment.

This film screening is part of the "10 Days for the 10 Year Plan" week of educational and cultural events focusing on homelessness and hunger issues in Alachua County.
