Published Jimmy - Fri, 07/02/2010 - 5:36pm

"Alas con Puntas" is a documentary by Cuban filmmaker Roberto Chile focusing on twelve Cuban artists. José Gómez Fresquet (Frémez), Alexis Leyva (Kcho), José Villa, William Pérez, Jesús Lara, Eduardo Roca (Choco), José Fúster, Jorge Luis Santos, Roberto Fabelo, Dausell Valdés, Javier Guerra and Alain Pino are all featured. Chile blends the wide variety of their artistic visions with his own audiovisual look. The documentary was released as part of the celebrations of the 155th anniversary of Cuban national hero José Martí's birthday. Chile recently released Alas con puntas… Toma 2 which is the continuation of this project.

At the film screening Girasol Study Abroad will have several different types of items available for donation including t-shirts, paintings by Eduin Fraga, and Cuba Va (a photographic book). Eduin Fraga is a contemporary Cuban artist who lives in Havana and has dedicated his artwork to promote the complexity of today's Cuba. He uses newspapers and collage to recreate his vision of the daily life of a country where art is a priority in spite of the difficult economic times it's facing.

Cuba Va, by photographer Roberto Fumagalli with an introduction by Roberto Chile, takes you to diverse places in contemporary Cuba, including many which most people do not have access to, such as prisons, high tech scientific centers and military units. The journey also includes the only center in the world that produces the vaccines against meningitis; Alicia Alonso’s Ballet School; the psychiatric hospital; and agricultural cooperatives. The book presents a great overview of various walks of Cuban life and an extraordinary photographic talent.
