Monthly Poker Tourney

Posted February 11th, 2007 by Coordinators

Be a part of the poker explosion to benefit the CMC. The game that has everyone buzzing is Texas Hold’em. Before you race down to the casino and sign up for a high stakes tournament, support the Civic Media Center and go “ALL IN” for alternative press. Winners will receive prizes from local eateries. Texas Hold’em is simple to learn and lots of fun to play. This game involves no gambling as participants may not win/lose any cash amount.

Donate $5.00 or more to play.

Gainesville Community Radio History

Posted October 5th, 2006 by Coordinators

How is it that Americans have gotten so interested in dynasties lately? There are the obvious oneâ??s Bush II, the Osbornes, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Then there are the unusual, not so obvious ones like FCC chairman Michael Powell son of Colin Powell.

Gainesville Community Radio Success

Posted June 9th, 2005 by Coordinators

As some of your may remember, way back in 2001 Sheila Bishop, Bill Bryson and a few other folks filed the paperwork to get the CMC a low-power FM permit. Later, when Barry Sawicki was CMC coordinator, he continued the battle for a Gainesville Community Radio Station by wading through red tape with the FCC. Now finally, all the hard work has paid offâ?? the Civic Media Centerâ??s permit for a Low Power FM Station came in the mail!

This means that Gainesville can have its own community radio station. Unfortunately, the CMC will have to share it with a Presbyterian church and another church group that is most accurately described as right of center. While there is already an abundance of these points of view available on the dial, the good news is that this radio station will afford us the opportunity to air the views not typically covered (or not accurately covered) in mainstream mediaâ?? at least a third of the time anyway. We could play music strictly by local bands, air Democracy Now or Alternative Radio, play speeches, run PSAs for progressive groups in town, or host call-in shows on issues of your choosing! The sky’s the limit! It’s YOUR radio station, you tell US what kind of things you’d like to hear.

Now comes the hard part. In order to make this project work, the CMC will have to do some wrangling, planning and some fundraising. If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact Barry Sawicki (bswcki@yahoo.com) or call the CMC at 373-0010. Sheila Bishop will be working on a benefit for
Gainesville Community Radio sometime semi-soon.

We will keep you all updated. Thanks for your support and patience thus far.

Sincerely,

Joe Richard

Testimonials About Community Radio

Tell the people what you think of Community Radio, what it does for a city, how it will change Gainesville.

“Radio is technology wasted. When I think of turning on the radio I imagine emptying myself into a void, listening to bland censored and stale music. Radio should be a vein in a community, giving life to every citizen who chooses to contribute, since radio, like every media, should be a conversation between the audience and the personality at the radio, be it disk jockey, a political commentator, or a guest.
