Brighter Future Silent Auction

It is with great pleasure that the United World Organization invites you to our Reaching for a Brighter Future Silent Auction, aiming to collect funds for the education of untouchable children in southern India.

The event will take place at the Civic Media Center (1021 W University Ave)
on February 2, 2007 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Limited parking is available.

The evening program includes performances by the UF Bhangra Club and by the West African Dance ensemble of Prof. Mohamed DaCosta, lecturer in African Performing Arts in the School of Theater and Dance and the Center for African Studies.

You will also be able to obtain portraits drawn live by the local artist Jimmie Williams.
Refreshments will be served.

A $3 cover donation will be collected upon entrance.

Celebrate Counterpoise

The Counterpoise Collective is throwing its second benefit bash at the Civic Media Center. The collective is a group of volunteers and interns who publish the magazine Counterpoise. Counterpoise reviews, criticizes, promotes, and defends the alternative press. Help the collective get to the American Library Association conference in Washington D.C. so they can promote the underrepresented alternative press. The Alternative press presents viewpoints and ideas outside the mainstream.

The party will feature live music from the local indie band Binary Forest Faux Pas. There will be drinks, snacks, raffles, friends, and more! Come out and support the Counterpoise collective and the alternative press.

Life and Debt

The Civic Media Center will be showing the film “Life and Debt.” Life & Debt is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. By combining traditional documentary telling with a stylized narrative framework, the complexity of international lending, structural adjustment policies and free trade will be understood in the context of the day-to-day realities of the people whose lives they impact.

Parenti at the Phillip’s

Michael Parenti will speak at the Phillip’s Center for the Performing Arts for FREE. The Civic Media Center, along with local organizations, businesses, academic departments, and individuals will sponsor the event, making it free and open to the public. His talk is titled “Systemic Censorship: The Structural Forms of Thought Prevention.”

Michael Parenti Dinner

Tickets are now available to have dinner with Michael Parenti. Parenti is an internationally known activist and one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. The CMC will bring this award-winning author and lecturer to Gainesville to speak at the Phillip’s Center for the Performing Arts. Admission to hear Parenti speak will be free. The CMC will raise the funds for the Center rental plus the honorarium. A donation of $15-20 gets you tickets to the fundraising dinner with Michael Parenti.

An Inconvenient Truth

The Civic Media Center, in cooperation with groups all over the country, will be showing the film, An Inconvenient Truth. All are welcome to attend this event, sponsored by MoveOn, The Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, and Al Gore. The film explores the facts and consequences related to global warming. The event will feature a conference call with Al Gore, including a Q & A session.

Celebrate Counterpoise

The Counterpoise Collective is celebrating 10 years of publication and dissent. Counterpoise interns and volunteers work hard to describe, defend, and criticize the alternative press and they need your help to keep going strong. Help Counterpoise raise money to attend the American Library Association annual conference in Washington D.C. Counterpoise attends every year to represent the Alternative Press at ALA. The Collective is having a fundraising party and everyone is invited to enjoy wine, drinks, music, snacks, raffles, friends, and more.

Kids and Family Day

The CMC would like to invite Gainesville kids and their families to spend a day exploring the CMC library and learning about community involvement. We will be holding “Kids and Family Day” twice a month, each event featuring a new movie and a different arts & crafts project. This is a great way for kids and their families to spend time together and meet new people in their community. We’ll provide the snacks, books, movie, and arts & crafts materials. Hope to see you there!

Poet Kole Ade Odutola Reads

Nigerian-born poet and photographer Kole Ade Odutola will read from his personal poetry collection at the Civic Media Center. In his poetry, Ade Odutola combines choice Nigerian words and phrases with the English language.

Ade Odutola is a member of the Association of Nigerian Authors and a founding member of the Coalition of Nigerian Artists. He has worked as a photojournalist and has coordinated the film forum for the Goethe Institute in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city. His first volume of poetry, The Poets Fled, was published in 1992. His second book, The Poet Bled, appeared in 1998.
