Iran (Is Not the Problem)

8:00 pm

On Saturday Sept 27th, 2008 at 8pm the Civic Media Center will screen the film: “IRAN (Is Not the Problem).”

The U.S. government and mainstream media tell us that Iran is a nuclear menace in defiance of the international community, bent on “wiping Israel off the map,” supporting terrorism, and unwilling to negotiate. This documentary disputes these claims as they are presented to us and puts them in the context of present and historical US imperialism and hypocrisy with respect to Iran.

“IRAN (Is Not the Problem)” looks at the struggle for democracy inside Iran, the consequences of the current escalation and the potential US and/or Israeli attack, and suggests some alternatives to consider.

The film will be followed by discussion on history and current situation of Iranian/ U.S. relations.  This event is presented as part of a nation-wide campaign of teach-ins about Iran scheduled for this day.

WHEN: Saturday, September 27 @ 8 PM
WHERE: The Civic Media Center, 1021 W. University Ave

On Thurs., Sept. 25 at 7:30pm, Victory Over Violence will screen two short films at the Civic Media Center: “ACLU Freedom Files: Women’s Rights” and “A Pyramid of Women.”The “Freedom Files” film on women’s rights is an overview of cases involving issues such as workplace discrimination, sexual harrassment and violence against women that the ACLU has been involved in.

“A Pyramid of Women” follows the case of a group of working class women from a poor section of Mumbai, India, who form a team to compete against all-male teams as part of the festivities during a traditionally male-dominated religious festival. The film focuses on the women’s struggle to challenge
male supremacy in their community’s culture.

The evening will also feature performances by the Sedoctaves, a student-organized, all-women a capella singing group from UF. They’ll perform standards and newer tunes in between the film screenings.

This event is being organized by Victory Over Violence in honor of RAINN Day, which is the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network’s campus campaign against sexual assault. In 2007, RAINN Day reached over 1 million students nationwide. http://www.rainn.org/ The primary purpose of Victory Over Violence is to raise awareness and unite the Gator Nation in the mission to end violence.
