“Chisholm 72: Unbought and Unbossed” documents Brooklyn Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and her campaign to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 1972.

Chisholm’s fight is for inclusion, as she writes in her book The Good Fight (1973), and encompasses all Americans “who agree that the institutions of this country belong to all of the people who inhabit it.” Shunned by the political establishment, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm asks people of color, feminists and young voters for their support to “reshape our society and take control of our destiny as we go down the Chisholm Trail in 1972.” To the surprise of many, voters responded.

Oil on Ice

“Oil on Ice”, narrated by Peter Coyote, is an awardwinning documentary that connects the fate of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the conflict over drilling for oil there to critical decisions  America makes about energy policy and transportation choices. The film examines the battle over one of America’s last great wild places, which is currently at the center of a national energy debate. Caught  in the balance are the Gwich’in Indians and the migratory wildlife in this fragile ecosystem. Through  stunning footage and indepth interviews, this entertaining film links seemingly unrelated matters such
as energy independence, global warming, Native American rights, wildlife and wild lands protection.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Hugo Chavez, elected president of Venezuela in 1998, is a colorful, unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation’s working class, and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history’s shortest-lived coup d’état. It’s a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela “Washington’s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba.”

Dark Days

In the pitch black of the tunnel, rats swarm through piles of garbage as highspeed trains leaving Penn Station tear through the darkness. For some of those who have gone underground, it has been home for as long as twentyfive years. Marc Singer goes underground to live with them, and films this “family.” A dozen or so men and one woman talk about their lives.

Deeply moving and surprisingly entertaining, “Dark Days” is an eyeopening experience that shatters the myths of homelessness by revealing a thriving community living in tunnels beneath New York City and honestly capturing their resilience and strength in their struggle to survive.
