WHY THE EIGHTIES MATTER: Afghanistan

February 26, 2008
8:00 pm

The 1980’s in Afghanistan saw the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency’s largest covert action ever: the secret arming, funding, and training of the “mujahideen” fighters in their war against the Soviet Union and the pro-Soviet government of Afghanistan. Many critics allege that this money and weaponry, coupled with the international Muslim movement to aid the Afghan mujahideen, gave rise to the particular strain of militant Islamic fundamentalism embodied by Al Qaeda and allied groups around the globe.

This program will feature a video segment from Adam Curtis’s BBC documentary “The Power of Nightmares,” followed by discussion on the consequences of the 1980’s for our present situation and the “global war on terror.”
