Big Read Movie and Discussion

The CMC is jumping on the band-wagon with the “Big Read,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture.
Alachua County Library District and Levy County Public Library System selected Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” as the book to read for our participation in The Big Read. Hurston’s book was chosen for lots of reasons- She was based in Florida for much of her life, and set her novel in Florida. She’s an interesting and sort of contradictory figure. She was a conservative on issues like integration despite being a ceiling crasher in terms of male or white only domains.
The Civic Media Center will show the film version of the book followed by a discussion of both at the end.
WHEN: Saturday, September 8 @ PM
WHERE: Civic Media Center, 1021 W. UNiversity Ave.
DOOR: Donations appreciated.
