CMC gets broadband internet service
The Civic Media Center now features radically faster internet access, thanks to a recent donation by Cox Communications, replacing our old dial-up service.
High speed service via cable is now available for the public computers at the CMC, greatly enhancing the internet experience for our members as well as our volunteer administration.
We are also attempting to upgrade and improve the computers currently at the CMC. However in this case our resources are extremely limited and we ask for any possible computer/part donations.
Any working Mac or PC donation will be accepted and welcome. Remember, donations are tax deductable! If you are replacing your PC for the start of school or have an old one sitting in the closet bring it by.
(read more for our computer “wish list”) We have volunteers that can repair most minor problems so “broken” systems might still be of use. As a rule-of-thumb, almost any hardware made after 1998 is still useful to us.
- One of our top desires would be notebooks that can be put out for use and then stored away safely after hours or during special events. Any PC notebook faster than 400mhz or any Mac notebook that can run OS 8.6 is useful.
- We are also hoping to obtain wireless networking hardware, so if you are upgrading to WiFi-G from WiFi-B (or A) we could really use your old hardware.
- While we have one (laser) printer, we do not have color printing ability at all, so any working inkjet printers (and/or supplies) are greatly appreciated.
- If you are replacing your cd-burner with a DVD burner or upgrading from a slower one, we could put your old one to use for easy and reliable backups.
- We no longer need donations of MONITORS due to a generous contribution earlier this year.
Simply bring by your donations during our regular hours…
Thank you!
An additional note about hard drives…
Many times when people donate a PC to the CMC, we receive it without a hard drive. Sometimes people remove them because they transfer the drive to another computer, or perhaps it is a security concern where they worry their data will go somewhere public and they are not sure how to erase it properly.
So now the CMC needs your old hard drives to help get a few PCs running or upgraded. Remember all donations are tax deductible.
Any hard drive larger than 1 gigabyte (made after 1998) is useful to us and would be greatly appreciated. We have experienced technical volunteers who will ensure all previous data is carefully erased.
